Description
Day lilies belong to the Liliaceae family and are classified as perennial plants. The height of the flower stem ranges from 23-81 inches, and the plant’s full length can reach 31-47 inches. The stem is not obvious, and the underground roots are thick and fleshy. It has elongated leaves that grow in thick clusters, and the flower flourishes from summer till autumn. A single bloom lasts for only one day, and for this reason it is also named “beauty for a day”. The flowering period of the day lily lasts over six months.
Medicinal
The juice of the roots is an effective antidote in cases of arsenic poisoning. The root also has a folk history of use in the treatment of cancer - extracts from the roots have shown antitumour activity. A tea made from the boiled roots is used as a diuretic. Some species of day lily can be poisonous!
